Five Northshore Schools Recognized By State for Student Success

Congratulations to Cottage Lake, Shelton View and Sunrise elementaries, as well as Kenmore and Leota middle schools for their work with improving student success. These schools were five of 216 schools statewide that were recognized for demonstrating exemplary performance or  making significant progress in closing opportunity and achievement gaps in the Washington School Improvement Framework (WSIF) measures.

This recognition is part of the work that has been done over the past year by the State Board of Education (SBE), the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) and the Educational Opportunity Gap Oversight and Accountability Committee(EOGOAC), who worked together to revise Washington State’s school recognition system to more equitably recognize schools.

“We are excited about this new approach to school recognition, which is designed to identify schools throughout the continuum of support,” said Kevin Laverty, Chair of the State Board of Education. “Recognized schools are in the top 20% on multiple measures and are closing achievement gaps or have all student groups achieving at a high level. Every school which earned a State Recognized School distinction this year should be very proud of their students and staff.”

Revisions to the new recognition system will be phased in over the course of three years. Both state level and local information will be used for recognition program. Measures for the first year include growth in both achievement on academic indicators, as well as school quality and student success (SQSS) measures.

Below are the Northshore schools that were recognized by the state for 2017-18:

• Cottage Lake Elementary: growth in the WSIF metrics while narrowing the gap between the highest and lowest performing student groups.

• Kenmore Middle School: closing gaps and demonstrating improvement among student groups identified for support.

• Leota Middle School: closing gaps and demonstrating improvement among student groups identified for support.

• Shelton View Elementary: high achievement in ELA and Math measures.

• Sunrise Elementary: high achievement in ELA, Math, and SQSS measures.
